How to prevent sticking, aluminum running, and pulling in the core pulling structure design of LPDC mold slider?
The slider is the core motion mechanism for low-pressure casting molds to achieve the characteristics of reverse buckling and concavity. The failure of the slider is often accompanied by shutdown, casting strain, and aluminum intrusion on the parting surface, making it one of the structures with the highest failure rate in mass production.
1、 Quantitative parameters of slider fit clearance and guide wear-resistant block
The clearance between the slider body and the wear-resistant plate on one side is 0.02-0.03mm; if the clearance is less than 0.01mm, it is prone to locking and jamming after thermal expansion; If the gap is greater than 0.04mm, aluminum liquid is prone to seep into the mating surface, causing aluminum chips to get stuck.
The preferred choice for wear-resistant blocks is graphite self-lubricating copper alloy, which can achieve a wear-resistant life of 8000-12000 cycles under continuous production conditions; Ordinary bronze wear-resistant blocks are suitable for intermittent production, with high-temperature lubricating grease added per shift.
The inclination angle of the slider inclined guide column is usually taken as 8 ° -15 °; Angle less than 8 °, insufficient core pulling stroke and pulling force; When the angle is greater than 15 °, the lateral force of the inclined guide column increases sharply, making it easy to bend and break.
Reserve margin for core pulling stroke: effective reverse stroke+3-5mm safety margin to ensure that the casting is completely detached from the reverse stroke and avoid pulling out.
Xinfeng Machinery calculates the pulling force during the DFM stage and matches the diameter of the inclined guide column and the number of wear-resistant blocks based on the casting clamping force.
2、 Key points of slider exhaust and aluminum sealing structure
The forming surface of the slider belongs to the secondary cavity, with a high risk of gas accumulation. A separate exhaust groove with a depth of 0.08-0.12mm is provided on the slider, which cannot be connected to the exhaust of the main parting surface.
The height of the aluminum sealing surface (stopper) of the slider is 5-8mm, and the stopper fitting surface is ground in place to prevent the aluminum liquid from drilling into the slider fitting gap; An aluminum escape groove is set on the outer side of the stopper to receive trace amounts of aluminum overflow.
Inverted thin-walled position, the slider cannot be separately equipped with a thermal joint. If necessary, an independent cooling water circuit should be arranged inside the slider to prevent heat accumulation and aluminum adhesion.
The large slider adopts double inclined guide column synchronous drive to avoid one-sided force deflection and prevent the gap from being enlarged and aluminum running on one side.
3、 Differences in preference for slider solutions among overseas customers
Southeast Asian customers prefer simple monoclinic guide column sliders, ordinary bronze wear-resistant blocks, and cheap accessories. On site fitters can polish the clearance by themselves and accept a small amount of aluminum cleaning.
North American automotive parts slider, wear-resistant block material, gap, and inclined guide column angle are written into PFMEA. The timing of core pulling action is connected to PLC, and position signal feedback is provided. If it is not in place, mold closing is prohibited.
European customers generally use graphite self-lubricating wear-resistant blocks to reduce oil pollution in castings, lower the risk of porosity, and require independent temperature control of the slider water circuit for stable thermal balance.
Middle East thick walled engineering machinery inverted casting, with high clamping force, uses hydraulic oil cylinder core pulling instead of inclined guide column, with sufficient pulling force, suitable for large stroke and large clamping force working conditions.
4、 Mass production failure chain of slider
Insufficient lubrication of the slider+high temperature → wear of the wear-resistant block → widening of the gap → infiltration of aluminum liquid into the gap → jamming of aluminum chips → bending of the inclined guide column under alternating load;
Excessive heat storage on the slider → aluminum adhesion on the reverse buckle surface → pulling on the side wall of the casting, becoming rougher as pulled, and the aluminum adhesion continues to worsen;
Insufficient grinding of the sealing aluminum surface, accumulation of aluminum overflow, repeated mold clamping and squeezing, and damage to the wear-resistant surface;
The timing of core pulling is disordered, and the casting is pushed out before completely detaching from the buckle, causing the buckle to tear and the casting to deform.
5、 Long tail traffic layout ideas
Sliding block core pulling, inclined guide column, and sliding block pulling belong to the category of mold structural faults for search, targeting mold designers, fitters, and process engineers.

6、 Common misconceptions in the industry
Misconception 1: The smaller the gap between the sliders, the more stable it is. After high-temperature expansion, the gap shrinks and directly locks and stops the machine.
Misconception 2: The larger the angle of the inclined guide column, the faster the core pulling. If the angle is too large, the lateral force will skyrocket, and the inclined guide column is prone to fatigue fracture.
Misconception 3: The slider does not need to be separately vented, as air accumulation can cause air holes and cold insulation at the reverse position, making defect investigation difficult.
